Disaster
A major disaster happened to my condo on Friday April 6. Around 6.30 p.m. I got a call from my sister, who lives at the condo, that a water pipe in my unit had broken and the drainage system did not work. As a result the water ran all over the condo. After I called the contractor, I rushed there and found that the flood was as high as 2-3 inches. We tried to get the water out of the unit as fast as possible but it was very difficult because it was dark, since there hasn't been electricity yet, and we hardly had any equipment. Also the protective papers which were used to cover the floor were damaged and blocked the way. Anyway, with the help of my sister's family, neighbours and some condo workers, we got the water out. The contractor and his workers, who arrived at the site shortly after that, continued to wipe, clean and blow dry the unit all night long.
We found that the water pipe which was installed in my bathroom had been broken. This was the cause of the disaster. The water pipe was under the counter sink. The contractor had tried to install the bathroom faucets on Thursday. He had complained about the accessories of the "Grohe" faucets, which were different from other brands. It was likely that the Grohe water pipe joint could not stand the high pressure of the water and broke. The contractor also did not turn off the main water guage. It was a pity there was nobody at the unit since it was a holiday. If it wasn't a holiday, the incident would be spotted and the damages would not be this much.
The next morning I went to see the damages at the condo. The beech wood floor in the living room was bent. The contractor took off some parts of the wood floor and we found that the wood subfloor structures including the latex glue, which was used as adhesives, were damp. The oak wood floor is Dear's bedroom and the old dark parquet in my bedroom however looked quite OK, although they were not as even and smooth as before. If we let them dry for some time and refinish them, they may be all right. However we have to wait and see for a couple of days.
We agree that we have to remove the beech wood floor in the living room and my mother's bedroom, of which the area is around 70 square metres, and install the new ones. The oak wood floor in Dear's bedroom and the dark red parquet wood floor in my bathroom will be repolished and refinished. Apart from the wood floor, all platform framings will have to be removed to let the water dry, before reinstalling them. The lower parts of some furnitures which were exposed to water will also be repaired and refinished.
The contractor said he would take responsibility of this disaster. However, I doubt he was able to do so, because he did not have enough fund. I am more than sure that I have to pay for more than half of the damages. I expect that the cost of the repair would be Baht 200.000-300,000. The timing will also be delayed for at least a month. I can't help feeling sorry for myself. What did I do to deserve this? Did I do anything bad so that I deserve this misfortune? I am very, very sad.
